Judge Sweeney's legal career has spanned more than 40 years and all three branches of State Government. Notable positions and accomplishments:

Assignment Judge. Judge Sweeney has managed and decided many hundreds of complex land use, public bidding, insurance fraud, and commercial cases during his eight years as Assignment Judge. There are only fifteen Assignment Judges in the entire State of New Jersey.

Presiding Judge of Family and Civil Divisions. In this position, Judge Sweeney presided over numerous jury trials of personal injury, medical malpractice, products liability and a variety of other cases.

New Jersey General Assembly. Judge Sweeney was elected to the General Assembly in 1974 and served one term before returning to the practice of law. While in the Assembly, he served on the Senate/Assembly Joint Appropriations Committee and the Taxation Committee.

Chief Counsel to the Governor. In 1990, Judge Sweeney was selected by Governor James J. Florio to be Chief Counsel to the Governor. Later that year, he became an Assistant Attorney General and was selected by the Governor to be Director of the Division of Gaming and Enforcement, overseeing casino operations in Atlantic City.

Chair of the Conference of Assignment Judges. As Chair of the Conference of Assignment Judges, Judge Sweeney met monthly with the Chief Justice, Acting Administrative Director of the Courts, the other Assignment Judges and the Section Chairs. The Conference recommends policy for the general operation of the Courts to the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
